Living in downtown Toronto, surrounded by incredible art and artists, it’s no wonder I frequently get asked what the EWF idea means. Mostly by those who have seen my work, heard me talk about it, or just out of sheer curiosity. I’ll tell you what I tell them.
If there exists a body of work, then it has come as a result of something other than that body itself. We may very well call it the ‘heart’. The EWF idea is the heart that pumps life into my art. Unusual as it may seem, we have to remember, the truth is what we make it.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve only ever had one true fantasy and it is being alive in an empty world. The typical post-apocalyptic lifestyle. Firewood and stone. I’ve has a lot of external diagnoses on this particular choice of fantasy but none ever seem to satisfy me.
My internal diagnosis however seems to be the only thing that has withstood the test of time.
The empty world signals rebirth. It is one of the rare situations that can describe the actual birth of a human being. When we’re born, we’re inclined to cry. In essence, breathe. That breath is associated with calmness and choosing peace. At that moment, the nine gruesome months before become a breeze.
It’s a type of truce that occurs not as a result of the direct involvement of the survivors in the ‘conflict’ before, but as a result of them choosing to work together despite having little understanding of the past.
The complete vulnerability, sincerity and extreme purity of connection that can be achieved by us humans in a situation like this is what keeps this fantasy close to my heart.
Practicing kindness and love like every breath is our first, and haning the knowledge that everything we see right now could disappear at a moment’s notice is the heart and soul of every single one of my creations.
It’s like a lovely gift wrapped in scary merch.
